Fund Spotlight: Carter Dewing Memorial Scholarship
Carter Dewing was a beloved son and friend - a bright light for all who knew him, remembered for his generous spirit, caring heart, and infectious smile. He was a dedicated student and athlete who loved music, family gatherings, and spending time with friends.
While attending Modesto High School, he embraced all that the campus had to offer. He participated in Leadership, Mock Trial, volunteered in Youth Court, and was selected as a California Legion of Honor Boys State Delegate - a role that reflected his drive to learn, lead and engage.
Carter was also a skilled athlete, choosing golf over tennis because it was more social! He played Varsity Golf and earned MVP honors in the Modesto Conference. He enjoyed being a mentor for the First Tee Program and sharing his passion for the sport with the next generation.
Carter was an empathic person and believed in honesty, integrity and respect for others. His Modesto High School teacher and Mock Trial coach, Kerry Castellani, noted “He was a compassionate champion for the underdog. Carter often took positions that were on the opposite side from most of his peers – he was the liberal voice in the attorney group. He always stood his ground, but he did it in such a kind of way that everyone stayed positive.” After being accepted to UC Santa Barbara, his family believed Carter was destined to make the world a better place.
Tragically, after many challenging years battling mental illness, he lost his fight at the age of 25. In the wake of that loss, Carter’s parents, Dean and Mary Dewing, chose to channel their grief into something lasting. “We wanted a way to honor our son that he would be proud of,” they shared. “Carter loved growing up in Modesto, he loved school and valued the education he received in the public school system. He felt fortunate that finances didn’t restrict his decision to go to college.” A recommendation from their family attorney led them to establish the Carter Dewing Memorial Scholarship at Stanislaus Community Foundation.
Beyond providing financial support, the Dewings hope the scholarship fund serves as a reminder that this community believes in its young people and wants to see them succeed. “Our wish is that this scholarship encourages students to pursue a college education and begin their journey toward making a positive impact in the world,” Mary said. “It would be even more wonderful if they were inspired to return to live, work, and contribute to our community.”
Carter’s story isn’t over. With every scholarship awarded, it continues – in the students who carry this community’s belief in them forward.
